Internal KPI Data Aggregation Tool Helped Save Millions Every Year

Designing and building the front-end of an internal KPI aggregation tool for one of the world's largest corporate travel companies.

American Express Global Business Travel - Texan Web Pro as an independent contractor

The Client

American Express Global Business Travel (Amex GBT) is one of the largest corporate travel management companies in the world. In 2021, they greenlit an internal initiative to consolidate the fragmented third-party tooling their travel agent teams relied on to track performance replacing multiple external platforms with a single, purpose-built data aggregation tool.

The Challenge

Travel agent performance data — call times, calls per hour, hotels booked, and dozens of other KPIs — was scattered across several third-party tools with no unified view. Managers lacked the operational visibility needed to coach effectively, benchmark performance, or identify efficiency gains at scale. The business needed a centralized platform that could surface this data clearly and reliably across a global workforce.

My Role

I was brought on as an independent contractor after the project was greenlit and budgeted, specifically because the team needed someone who could bridge design and development. Over 12 months I owned the front-end from concept to launch across three distinct phases:

During the first phase I collaborated with the project lead, stakeholders, and backend developer to produce internal developer-facing documentation — design docs and requirement specs — that gave the team a shared foundation before a single line of code was written.

What I Did

For the following four months I designed the entire front-end in Figma, including user flow diagrams that mapped the experience end to end and gave the development team a clear blueprint to build against.

In the final six months I built the front-end in React.js, introducing modern tooling — TanStack Query for API state management, TanStack Table for data display, and TanStack Virtual for infinite scroll — that kept the application performant under the weight of large datasets.

Before my contract ended I onboarded a junior React.js developer, leaving the codebase in a healthy state through consistent naming conventions and thorough inline documentation.

The Results

Quest launched globally across American Express GBT. In 2022, the company reported approximately $235 million in permanent cost savings initiatives, an Adjusted EBITDA improvement from negative territory in 2021 to $103 million for the full year, and continued efficiency scaling into 2023. Amex GBT publicly cited centralized analytics, operational visibility, productivity tooling, and coaching infrastructure as key drivers of those results — all of which were core functions of the platform I helped build.

What They Had To Say

"I would highly recommend Moses for any role or project that requires a dedicated and open-minded individual. During my tenure as the product development lead, I had the pleasure of working closely with Moses, His open-mindedness, curiosity, and willingness to work tirelessly during crucial times make them an ideal candidate for roles that require adaptability, a thirst for knowledge, and a strong work ethic."
